How to Identify Suicidal People: A Systematic Approach to Risk Assessment
Thomas White, PhD, is a psychologist with over 35 years of experience in correctional mental health. Prior to entering private practice, Dr. White had a long and distinguished career at the U.S Department of Justice, Federal Bureau of Prisons.
While there, Dr. White was Chief Psychologist at several correctional facilities, and coordinator of the Suicide Prevention Program at the United States Penitentiary, Leavenworth. He was responsible for a wide range of clinical activities, including oversight of the psychology and drug treatment programs in 18 federal prisons, policy development, specialized correctional training and supervision, and individual and group therapy.
Currently in independent clinical practice, Dr. White provides consultation, training and correctional litigation support services on jail and prison suicide. His consultation and training services have been used by more than 20 percent of US state departments of correction, federal institutions, county jails and private correctional facilities. » »
He has successfully helped decision-makers from national, state, county and private correctional organizations develop more effective strategies to avoid negative clinical outcomes for offenders, as well as minimizing systemic vulnerabilities in the organizations.
Dr. White's highly regarded workshops on suicide risk management and clinical assessment have been presented to hundreds of mental health professionals, correctional administrators and practitioners from a diverse range of professional disciplines. These workshops have been presented to many nationally recognized correctional organizations, including the National Institute of Corrections, National Commission on Correctional Health Care, and the American Correctional Health Services Association.
He has also offered training seminars at meetings of the American Association of Suicidology, Canadian Psychological Association, University of Miami Miller School of Medicine, NOVA University, and is a frequent presenter at national conventions of the American Psychological Association.
